Link-Fest Shavings

Like bits of wood shavings left on the floor after hand-planing, here are some link-litter that got left behind in my "To-Blog" folder.

Use them for fragile-object packing, hamster-cage litter, or picking up grease from the garage floor.

Your choice.

HD Tune (freeware) - now updated to version 2.53. Great utility to get info on your hard-disk drives.

Drive Manager (freeware) - supports local and network drives. Tons on info and detail.

filehippo.com Update Client (freeware) - FileHippo is one of the few download sites I really look to to find the latest update notifications of favorite programs. Now they did one better. Their application scans your drive for installed software, checks against filehippo's catalog to see if newer versions exist. If so, they are offered in a nice window displayed in you browser. Handy.

FileHamster (freeware) - "FileHamster is a version tracking application focused on meeting the needs of content creators." What it does is to create incremental backups of your work when files are modified. You can store notes, zip archive previous versions, and much more. I can see a number of practical uses for this application as I do a lot of documentation versioning at work. As seen on Lifehacker's Download of the Day

PC World - 101 Fantastic Freebies - Links. I use quite a few that made the list. Some omissions are glaring (IMHO) but I didn't write the article. Not a bad place to go looking for new finds.

Mohawke's Best of the Best Free and Open Source Software Collection: Mac OS X and Windows software Collection - Long title. Great link collection. Again, quite a few favorites of mine on this list, and some interesting new (to me) titles to look into later. Windows List. Mac List. Games Galore!

Danger from the Deep (freeware) - Super slick Open Source World War II German submarine simulator. Great graphics!

Neverball (freeware) - rolling marble game.

NK2View - NirSoft (freeware) - Did you know that if you use Outlook the email names used in the To/Cc fields are retained? The NK2 file is the "auto-complete" file. Great place to review if you are auditing an Outlook user's pc. Anyway, this handy utility allows you to view the N2K file, display all the email address records stored, and export them into various file formats. Handy for security techs.

Related tech articles on the NK2 file:

SysExporter - NirSoft (freeware) - from the developer's description, "...grab the data stored in standard list-views, tree-views, list boxes, combo boxes, text-boxes, and WebBrowser/HTML controls from almost any application running on your system, and export it to text, HTML or XML file."

Now my floor is clean. How's your's look?
